Diamond ratios can completely change how a stone looks, even when the carat weight is the same. A small change in length or width can make a diamond appear softer, longer, wider or more dramatic.
This is especially important for fancy-shaped diamonds. Oval, emerald, radiant, cushion, pear and marquise diamonds can all look very different within the same shape category.

This guide explains diamond length-to-width ratios in clear terms. It also shows why the most beautiful ratio is not always the most fashionable one.
A diamond’s length-to-width ratio compares its length with its width. The calculation is simple:
Length ÷ width = length-to-width ratio
For example, a diamond measuring 10mm long and 7mm wide has a ratio of approximately 1.43.
A ratio close to 1.00 creates a square or round appearance. A higher number creates a longer, narrower shape.

However, the number is only a starting point. It does not show the full outline, shoulder shape, symmetry or facet pattern.
Diamond ratios affect three important things: shape, finger coverage and visual balance.
A shorter oval may look soft and full. A longer oval may look elegant and dramatic. Both can be beautiful, but they create different styles.
Ratios also affect how large a diamond appears. A longer outline can cover more of the finger, although carat weight may be distributed differently through the stone.
Finally, the ratio affects the setting. A very long diamond may need different claw placement, band proportions or side stones.
This is why the diamond and setting should be planned together through a considered bespoke design process.
The ranges below are practical visual guides, not fixed rules. Personal preference still matters, and two diamonds with the same ratio can look very different.

These ranges should never replace viewing the diamond. They simply help you understand the shape before comparing stones.
Oval diamonds are one of the clearest examples of why ratios matter. A short oval and a long oval can feel like completely different shapes.
The GIA oval diamond guide notes that many buyers prefer ratios between 1.30 and 1.50. This range often creates a balanced outline.
An oval between approximately 1.30 and 1.38 often looks soft, full and rounded. This can suit clients who want an oval shape without a very narrow appearance.
A shorter oval can also feel more classic. However, it may offer less length across the finger than a more elongated stone.
An oval around 1.39 to 1.45 often gives a graceful middle ground. It looks clearly oval, but it does not feel overly narrow.
This range is popular because it works with solitaires, halos and trilogy settings.
An oval above approximately 1.46 creates a longer look. It can feel elegant, modern and dramatic.
However, ratio alone is not enough. A long oval with flat shoulders may look thin or uneven. A beautifully shaped long oval should still feel full through the centre.

Two oval diamonds can both have a ratio of 1.42 and still look completely different.
One may have rounded shoulders and a full outline. The other may have flatter sides or pointed ends.
The facet pattern can also change the appearance. One oval may look bright and lively. Another may show a strong dark bow tie across the centre.

Emerald cut diamonds use long step facets rather than brilliant-style faceting. This creates broad flashes of light and a clean, architectural look.
A ratio near 1.30 gives a wider rectangular appearance. A ratio closer to 1.45 feels more traditionally elongated.
Longer emerald cuts above 1.50 can look very sleek. However, they may also feel narrow if the width is too limited.

The centre steps should look balanced. The corners should feel even, and the hall-of-mirrors pattern should not look disjointed.
A beautiful emerald cut should have calm, confident flashes of light. It should not look flat or lifeless.
For emerald cuts, we also consider how the ratio works with the band width. A narrow band can emphasise length, while a wider band can create stronger balance.
Radiant cut diamonds combine a rectangular or square outline with brilliant-style faceting. This gives them more sparkle than an emerald cut.
A square radiant sits close to 1.00. A slightly elongated radiant may sit between 1.15 and 1.30. Longer styles can reach 1.40 or above.
Shorter radiant cuts feel full and bold. Longer radiants feel modern and flattering.
However, the faceting can vary widely. Some radiant diamonds show even brilliance. Others show dark areas or a less attractive crushed pattern.
Therefore, the best radiant ratio is the one that works with a strong facet pattern and a balanced outline.
Cushion diamonds can be square, slightly rectangular or clearly elongated. Their soft corners create a romantic look.
A square cushion often sits close to 1.00. A ratio around 1.10 creates a subtle rectangle. Ratios from approximately 1.16 upwards create an elongated cushion look.
Elongated cushion engagement rings are currently popular because they combine softness with finger coverage.
Cushion diamonds can have very different facet patterns. Some show broad, defined flashes. Others have a crushed-ice appearance.
Corner shape also matters. Rounded corners create a softer outline. More defined corners can make the diamond look closer to a radiant.
As a result, the same cushion ratio can produce very different visual effects.
Pear diamonds combine a rounded end with a pointed tip. The ratio controls whether the stone looks full, balanced or very long.
The GIA pear diamond guide notes that many experts prefer ratios around 1.50 to 1.75.
A ratio near 1.50 gives a fuller pear. A ratio near 1.65 often feels balanced. A longer pear above 1.70 can look elegant and dramatic.
The shoulders should be even. The wings should curve smoothly into the point.
A pear should not look too triangular or too rounded. The point should sit centrally, and the two sides should feel symmetrical.
Pear diamonds can also show a bow tie. Therefore, the centre should be checked carefully in different lighting.
Marquise diamonds are designed to look long and elegant. Their pointed ends create strong finger coverage.
The GIA marquise guide notes that marquise diamonds submitted to its laboratory commonly range from 1.60 to 2.20.
A shorter marquise may feel wider and fuller. A ratio around 1.80 to 2.00 often creates a classic marquise look.
A ratio above 2.00 creates a very long shape. This can be striking, but the stone needs careful assessment.
A very narrow marquise may show weaker light return. It can also have a more visible bow tie.
The points need secure protection because they are vulnerable to damage. The setting should support both ends properly.

A princess cut is usually chosen for its square appearance. The closer the ratio is to 1.00, the more square the diamond looks.

Ratios above 1.05 create a rectangular princess cut. This may be intentional, but the design should support it.
Symmetry is especially important. Uneven sides or poorly aligned facets can affect the stone’s beauty.
Round diamonds also have length and width measurements. A well-proportioned round should be very close to 1.00.
However, round diamond beauty is assessed differently. Cut grade, angles, table, depth, symmetry and polish are more important than elongation.

Therefore, a round diamond should not be chosen by length-to-width ratio alone.
A longer ratio can increase finger coverage, but it does not automatically mean the diamond is better or larger.
Two diamonds with the same carat weight can distribute weight differently. One may carry more weight beneath the surface. Another may spread more across the top.
This is why measurements matter. Carat weight tells you how much the diamond weighs. Millimetre measurements tell you how large it appears.
A well-proportioned elongated diamond can look impressive. However, an overly shallow or poorly cut stone may lose brightness.
The aim is not to find the longest possible diamond. The aim is to find the best balance of spread, beauty and light performance.
There is no universal ideal ratio for most fancy-shaped diamonds. Personal preference matters.
You may prefer a short, full oval rather than a long one. You may prefer a square cushion rather than an elongated cushion.
A ratio outside a popular range can still be beautiful if the outline and light performance are strong.
In fact, choosing only by a recommended number can cause you to reject a diamond that looks exceptional in person.
Use ratios to narrow your search. Then let the real diamond make the final decision.
The same diamond can look different depending on the setting.
A long oval can look even more elongated on a slim solitaire band. A wider trilogy setting can make the same stone feel more balanced.
An emerald cut may suit tapered baguettes. A pear diamond may need claws that protect the point without interrupting the outline.
