An oval diamond is often described as a round brilliant stretched into an ellipse. It is useful shorthand, but a poor way to choose one. Two oval diamonds can share the same carat weight, colour, clarity and even length-to-width ratio yet look remarkably different when viewed side by side.
The character of an oval comes from the relationship between its outline, proportions and facet pattern. Its shoulders may be softly rounded or comparatively straight; its tips may be delicate or full; its centre may return crisp light or show a distracting dark band. Choosing well therefore requires more than finding acceptable figures on a grading report. It means looking at how the entire stone works as a visual composition.
Before considering individual measurements, look at the silhouette. A well-resolved oval should feel balanced from end to end and side to side, with curves that flow naturally into the tips. Symmetry matters because even a subtle mismatch between the two halves can become more noticeable once the diamond is centred in a ring.
The shoulders are particularly influential. These are the curved areas between the widest part of the diamond and its pointed ends. High, rounded shoulders create a fuller outline, while flatter shoulders can make an oval appear slimmer or slightly more angular. If the shoulders are very full, the stone may begin to look egg-shaped. If they are too straight, it can take on something of a marquise-like character.
Neither a soft, plump oval nor a long, slender one is automatically better. The most flattering choice depends on the wearer’s hand, the setting and the desired presence of the finished ring. An oval diamond’s length-to-width ratio is calculated by dividing its length by its width. It gives a useful indication of whether the stone will look broad, classically elongated or particularly slender. It does not, however, describe the complete outline.
Two diamonds with the same ratio may have different shoulders, tip shapes and distributions of width. One might carry its fullness through the centre, while another narrows more quickly towards the ends. This is why ratio works best as a way to refine a shortlist rather than as a substitute for seeing the stones themselves.
Personal preference should lead the decision. A wider oval can have a substantial, softly curved presence, while a more elongated stone may create a graceful line along the finger. The setting also changes the effect: delicate claws preserve more of the outline, whereas a halo or bezel adds a new boundary around it. Carat is a measurement of weight, not visible size. For an oval diamond, the face-up dimensions tell you how much surface area the stone presents when viewed from above. This visual presence is often referred to as its spread.
A diamond may carry more of its weight below the girdle, making it deeper without looking correspondingly larger from the top. A thick girdle can also hold weight around the perimeter. Conversely, a stone that appears unusually large for its carat weight may be too shallow or may have proportions that compromise its light behaviour. A generous spread is valuable only when it is accompanied by a convincing outline and lively light return.
When comparing oval diamonds, consider carat weight alongside the stated length, width and depth. Then look at the actual stone. Measurements can explain why one oval appears larger than another, but they cannot tell you whether that additional size has been achieved gracefully.
Many elongated brilliant-cut diamonds show some degree of bow tie: a darker band or pair of shadowed areas crossing the centre. It develops through the interaction of the diamond’s facet structure, viewing angle and contrast. A slight bow tie can contribute definition and movement. A broad, persistent dark area that dominates the centre is far less desirable.
The important question is not simply whether a bow tie exists, but how strongly it affects the stone in ordinary viewing conditions. Does the centre continue to flash as the diamond moves, or does it remain dull? Is the contrast balanced, or does it divide the diamond into visibly disconnected sections?

Oval diamonds are generally cut with modified brilliant facet arrangements, but that description covers a wide range of appearances. Some display larger, more orderly flashes of light. Others have a finer, more splintered pattern, sometimes described as a crushed-ice appearance. Between those extremes are stones with a mixture of broad flashes and smaller scintillation.
This is partly a matter of taste. Crisp, clearly organised facets can make the pattern easy to read, while a finer pattern may create a softer shimmer. What matters is that the facet arrangement feels balanced across the diamond and does not leave lifeless patches beneath the table or close to the tips.
Look for the way brightness, fire and contrast alternate as the oval moves. A successful stone should not appear uniformly white in every position; contrast helps the flashes remain visible. Equally, excessive darkness or a muddled centre can interrupt the sense of life. A grading report records essential measurements and quality characteristics, but it cannot fully communicate this moving pattern.
It is tempting to search for one set of “ideal” oval proportions. In practice, table size, total depth, crown height, pavilion angles, girdle thickness, outline and facet arrangement operate as a system. A promising depth percentage cannot rescue an awkward outline, just as a preferred ratio cannot guarantee strong light performance.
Published proportion ranges can be helpful for initial screening, particularly when reviewing a large inventory. They should not become rigid pass-or-fail rules. Fancy-shaped diamonds are not assessed in precisely the same way as round brilliants, and visual evaluation remains essential.
The strongest oval is not necessarily the one with the most impressive isolated figure. It is the one in which the proportions support a pleasing spread, coherent facet pattern and attractive light return without an intrusive bow tie.
An oval does not exist in isolation once it becomes part of an engagement ring. Tapered ring shoulders can reinforce its length, while broader or straighter shoulders may give the composition more width. A fine four-claw setting can leave the curved outline particularly open; six claws introduce a different rhythm and can accentuate the tips. A halo increases overall scale, while a bezel traces the exact silhouette and makes every curve more prominent.
Orientation matters too. Most oval diamonds are set vertically, but an east–west setting creates a distinctly modern proportion across the finger.
